Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in 1990 in Lagos, Wizkid was just 11 when he started out. He exploded onto the scene in 2011 with Superstar (‘Holla at Your Boy’). Global recognition came in 2016 with Drake's ‘One Dance,’ which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in fifteen countries, marking Afrobeats' first global breakthrough. His album Made in Lagos (2020) became the best-selling African project in the United States, ranking 28th on the Billboard 200 and remaining in the charts for 130 weeks thanks to ‘Essence’ featuring Tems, the first Nigerian track to reach the US top 10. In 2025, Wizkid surpassed 8 billion global streams on Spotify, mainly driven by the tracks ‘Joro’, “Ginger” and ‘B. D'OR’, and accumulated 12.9 million monthly listeners. He is the highest-paid African artist on the platform. Winner of a Grammy, four BET Awards, four MOBO Awards and three Billboard Music Awards, he was also nominated for an American Music Award (in the Favourite Afrobeats Artist category) in 2025.
