Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation since 2018, Paula Ingabire is widely regarded as one of the most influential technology leaders on the African continent. She believes that artificial intelligence could soon contribute up to 6% of Rwanda’s GDP, not only through applications in healthcare, education and agriculture, but also by making public administration more efficient and responsive. For Ingabire, AI also offers Africa a unique opportunity to unlock its demographic dividend—a central theme of the Global AI Summit on Africa, held in Kigali last April. With one of the world’s youngest populations, she argues, the continent can turn its demographic strength into an engine of innovation, productivity and inclusive economic growth through strategic investment in artificial intelligence.
