Originally part of the well-known group Sexion d'Assaut, he launched his solo career in 2013 under the name Maître Gims. Having dropped the ‘Maître’ part of his stage name in 2013 and continued as Gims, the almost veteran artist continues to reign supreme in the world of French rap. Born Gandhi Alimasi Djuna on 6 May 1986 in Kinshasa, Gims has enjoyed a string of hits. His second EP, Le Nord se Souvient, was released on 13 September 2024 and features an impressive series of singles that topped French and international charts: ‘Spider’ with Dystinct (which stayed at number one in France for seven weeks), ‘Sois Pas Timide’, ‘Ciel,’ ‘Ninao’ and ‘Air Force Blanche’ featuring Marseille rapper Jul. It was a golden moment, crowned by the title of Male Artist of the Year at the 2025 Victoires de la Musique awards. Poprap, Afropop, a dash of ndombolo... Gims varies his genres, mixing urban energy with melodies that range from gentle to more upbeat. He also knows how to cross generational barriers. And he draws crowds, filling the Stade de France with 72,000 spectators during his Fuego Tour in September 2019, a record for a French rapper.
