Burna Boy (Nigeria)
King of Afrofusion
With his trailblazing blends of Afrobeats, hip-hop, reggae and R&B, Burna Boy has been taking the music world by storm since his debut album L.I.F.E. in 2013. He was born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu in Port Harcourt on 2 July 1991, his father a company manager, his mother a translator. He was only 10 when he began experimenting with music, influenced by traditional Nigerian sounds, American hip-hop and Jamaican reggae. As Burna Boy, he became the inventor of Afrofusion, a sound that first captivated Nigeria and then the world, and racked up awards (Grammy Award in 2020, Bet Award for International Artist in 2021 and 2023). His latest album, No Sign of Weakness, released in July, features big names like Mick Jagger, Travis Scott and Stromae. And the figures confirm his status: around 25 million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 8 billion cumulative streams.
