In 2009, a 21-year-old Cameroonian computer scientist confronted a simple but urgent reality: Africa had far too few cardiologists. His solution was to bring the consultation to the patient. Despite significant technical and financial obstacles, Arthur Zang developed the Cardio-Pad in 2013—a device combining electrodes with a tablet that records a patient’s electrocardiogram and transmits the results over the internet to a cardiologist for remote diagnosis. Winner of multiple international awards, the invention transformed access to cardiac care across developing countries and paved the way for a new generation of telemedicine solutions. Now CEO of Himore Medical Equipments, Zang continues to design affordable, user-friendly medical technologies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his company developed an intelligent medical oxygen production system, and it is now building diagnostic tools equipped with automated analysis and clinical decision-support capabilities. Young and visionary, Zang represents a distinctly African approach to innovation: pragmatic, accessible, and driven by social impact rather than technological spectacle. As he told Le Monde in 2017: “You must have both the drive and the humility to teach yourself throughout your life, across many different fields.”
